On 31 October 2024 Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Sohail Khan attended the Global Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese side.
In his address to the Forum delegates, Mr Khan noted that poverty is a problem faced by the whole world. Poverty and related hunger, diseases and social conflicts seriously hinder human development. The successful experience of the SCO countries in poverty reduction can be very useful for the international community.
He also stressed that in this regard the SCO member states, in accordance with their national priorities, are working persistently to build a society free of social barriers. Undoubtedly, improving the well-being and living standards of the population was a priority. Member states advocate creation of favourable conditions for the development of mutual trade, transition to modern agriculture using high technology, digitalisation, food security, e-commerce, and the expansion of exports and imports of agricultural produce.
Participants in the event praised China's efforts and achievements in poverty reduction.
