On January 2, 2017 the SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guttieris on the occassion of his assuming the duties of the main administrative person of the global organization.
"I would like to cordially congratulate you with assuming your duties as the Secretary General of the United Nations.
Undoubtedly your remarkable career at the national level and invaluable expertise and experience in multilateral diplomacy attest that you are in the best possible position to be at the helm of the United Nations at these challenging times for international relations.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization traditionally attaches great importance to comprehensive cooperation with the UN, which has been gradually developing since 2004 and has already become a successful example of effective cooperation between universal global and regional organizations.
The SCO Member-States always proceed from the assumption that the UN is a leading universal international structure for maintaining global security and a major platform for solving interstate and international issues. Our leaders are firm and coherent in their position on strengthening the UN's central coordinating role in international affairs, which was vividly reflected in the SCO 15th Anniversary Tashkent Declaration of June 24, 2016.
The latest UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/71/14 on Cooperation between the UN and the SCO, adopted on 21 November 2016, marks the beginning of a new stage of partnership between the UN and the SCO, by opening new vistas of broad-spectrum cooperation and helping to implement a multi-faceted potential of the two organizations.
Your Excellency, I wish you all the best in carrying out your crucial responsibilities and assure you that in doing so you can always rely on the full support of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization".
